Last Week’s Links

Last week had 2 scrumptious links.

Barefoot began the week with Buy Myself Flowers, in a post about bondage and self-love.

And MrsK finished us off with some introspection about living in the dark versus taking a reprieve In The Shade.

You can read those Mmm’s and more here.

Mmm Makers

This is the last month for this section of Mmm Mondays. Does that mean we no longer want to highlight content creators?

No. It’ll change though to include those outside of the blogging world. I hope to include vloggers, only fans creators, models, writers and clothing designers.

Have a Mmm Maker in mind? Let MrsK know!

Until then check these Mmm Makers out.

Book of the Month

Her Body and Other Parties: Stories by Carmen Maria Machado

In Her Body and Other Parties, Carmen Maria Machado blithely demolishes the arbitrary borders between psychological realism and science fiction, comedy and horror, fantasy and fabulism. While her work has earned her comparisons to Karen Russell and Kelly Link, she has a voice that is all her own. In this electric and provocative debut, Machado bends genre to shape startling narratives that map the realities of women’s lives and the violence visited upon their bodies.

A wife refuses her husband’s entreaties to remove the green ribbon from around her neck. A woman recounts her sexual encounters as a plague slowly consumes humanity. A salesclerk in a mall makes a horrifying discovery within the seams of the store’s prom dresses. One woman’s surgery-induced weight loss results in an unwanted houseguest. And in the bravura novella Especially Heinous, Machado reimagines every episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, a show we naively assumed had shown it all, generating a phantasmagoric police procedural full of doppelgangers, ghosts, and girls with bells for eyes.

Earthy and otherworldly, antic and sexy, queer and caustic, comic and deadly serious, Her Body and Other Parties swings from horrific violence to the most exquisite sentiment. In their explosive originality, these stories enlarge the possibilities of contemporary fiction.

Due to the short amount of time we may get during the holidays, I think this is a perfect pick. Each section is a short story, and the book as a whole is designed to make you think outside the box, or find your place within it. I hope you’ll read a long with me.

Week 152 Recipe

December is here. Whether you celebrate the holidays or not, this is a time of year when people come together for good food and cheer. This month, I’ll give you a recipe each week that fits into the holiday theme. Since all good meals start with an appetizer, this recipe is a great place to start.

Baked Brie

Milky rivers of baked brie cheese ooze out of a buttery puff pastry, melting together with nutty pecans and a hint of brown sugar in this over-the-top party favorite.
Prep Time10 minutes
Cook Time35 minutes
Total Time45 minutes
Course: Appetizer, party
Cuisine: French
Keyword: brie, cheese, party, vegetarian
Servings: 8 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 8-14 oz wheel of brie cheese
  • 1 sheet store-bought puff pastry
  • 1/4 cup pecans roughly chopped
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp dark brown sugar
  • 1 egg for egg wash

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400°F.
  • On a lightly floured surface roll out puff pastry until pastry is large enough to wrap around the wheel of brie.
  • In a greased rimmed baking dish or pie pan set puff pastry in the center and arrange brie in the middle. Top brie with pecans, brown sugar and black pepper. Carefully fold corners into the center as shown in the photos above and pinch to close.
  • In a small bowl beat egg along with 2 tbsp water. Using a pastry brush, coat the outside of the puff pastry.
  • Bake on center rack for 35-40 minutes, or until crust is a deep golden brown.
  • Serve warm with crackers or fruit.
