Last Week’s Links

Last Week had 3 delightful links.

MrsK began with Sir knows Best, a short story about Masturbation.

Mrs. Jones reminisced about postcoital noticing’s in What do you see?

And Barefoot finished us off with a look back on the year in The Year that Was.

Book of the Month

Her Body and Other Parties: Stories by Carmen Maria Machado

In Her Body and Other Parties, Carmen Maria Machado blithely demolishes the arbitrary borders between psychological realism and science fiction, comedy and horror, fantasy and fabulism. While her work has earned her comparisons to Karen Russell and Kelly Link, she has a voice that is all her own. In this electric and provocative debut, Machado bends genre to shape startling narratives that map the realities of women’s lives and the violence visited upon their bodies.

A wife refuses her husband’s entreaties to remove the green ribbon from around her neck. A woman recounts her sexual encounters as a plague slowly consumes humanity. A salesclerk in a mall makes a horrifying discovery within the seams of the store’s prom dresses. One woman’s surgery-induced weight loss results in an unwanted houseguest. And in the bravura novella Especially Heinous, Machado reimagines every episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, a show we naively assumed had shown it all, generating a phantasmagoric police procedural full of doppelgangers, ghosts, and girls with bells for eyes.

Earthy and otherworldly, antic and sexy, queer and caustic, comic and deadly serious, Her Body and Other Parties swings from horrific violence to the most exquisite sentiment. In their explosive originality, these stories enlarge the possibilities of contemporary fiction.

Week 155 Recipe

Sticking to the Holiday Party theme, this week’s recipe is sure to make you say Mmm.

Million Dollar Dip

The name of this appetizer says it all!
Prep Time14 minutes
Total Time1 hour 35 minutes
Course: Appetizer
Cuisine: American
Keyword: buffet, celebration, christmas, holiday, party, potluck
Servings: 10 servings

Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. slivered almonds
  • 8 slices bacon
  • 1 8- oz. package cream cheese softened
  • 1 c. mayonnaise
  • 2 c. freshly shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 4 green onions sliced thin and divided
  • 1/2 tsp. kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp. ground black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/8 tsp. cayenne
  • Buttery crackers bagel chips, to serve
  • Hot sauce to serve

Instructions

  • In a large skillet over medium-low heat, toast the almonds until lightly golden and fragrant, 5 to 7 minutes. Remove from the pan and allow to cool.
  • In the same large skillet over medium heat, cook the bacon, turning as needed, until the fat has rendered and the bacon is golden and crispy, 8 to 10 minutes. Drain the bacon on a paper towel-lined plate. Let the bacon cool to room temperature, then crumble it into bite-size pieces.
  • In a large bowl, combine the cream cheese and mayonnaise until very smooth. Fold in the cheese, toasted almonds, cooked bacon, 3 green onions, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and cayenne. Stir until well combined.
  • Transfer to a serving bowl, cover with plastic wrap or an airtight lid, and chill for at least 1 hour.
  • Garnish with the remaining green onion and serve with crackers, bagel chips, and hot sauce.

Notes

Million dollar dip was created in the 1950s by Helen Corbitt for the Zodiac Room, a restaurant located inside of a Neimen Marcus in Dallas, Texas. For this reason, it is also known as Neiman Marcus dip. The name likely adapted over the years because the “rich” and indulgent ingredients—cream cheese, bacon, cheddar cheese—make it taste like a million bucks!
Tip: Play around with different types of cheese! Swap some of the cheddar for Swiss or add in some blue cheese for a stronger flavor.
